I was sitting at my desk today and found myself staring out the window onto this scene.  I’ve become aware of a tendency I have to lift my head up and to the left and stare out the window when I am deep in thought about what to write in an email or in a training session I am drafting.

IMAG0261On this particular day, looking out at these autumnal colours, I found myself thinking about the connection between seasonal change and new life.

There Is A Natural Flow to Things

The world around us goes through a natural cycle of growth in spring, flowering in summer, shedding in autumn and hibernating in winter.  We watch it in wonder each year.  We get excited at the blossoming of pretty and fragrant flowers, and enjoy the beauty of the colors of the changing leaves in autumn and the glistening frosty branches through the winter.

What would happen if we were able to apply this same principle to our lives?  If we understood that there is a cyclical pattern to our lives that encompassed:

  • times of growth (spring),
  • basking in our accomplishments and smelling the roses (summer),
  • periods of shedding what isn’t working for us anymore (autumn); and
  • moments of rest and recuperation to be ready for the next cycle (winter)

then we might begin to see the bigger picture of the phases we have to move through to get the best from ourselves.

Each of these phases is dependent on the one before and the one that comes after it.  We can’t blossom indefinitely and we can’t stay in hibernation either.  But we can recognize that wherever we are is just a season that we are passing through and there is a reason why we are thinking or feeling a certain way about what’s going on in and around us.
