There are 7 billion human beings on this planet and each one of them is unique.  Even identical twins have something unique about them.  That’s how we are as humans.  Yet we are all quick to put ourselves in boxes, constantly looking for the similarities we have with others so we can feel part of something and less like the weirdo we are afraid we might be.

We spend all this time trying to blend in with the crowd, and then we get to a job interview and we are supposed to share what makes us unique.  Employers want to know what value we will add to what’s already there:

  • What makes you the right person for the job?
  • What do you have that the other candidates don’t have?
  • Why should we offer you the role?

So what does make you unique?  Is it something to do with the way you look? The way you think? The way you manage a particular type of situation? The combination of things you are interested in?  There is no other human being like you who is walking this planet experiencing life the way you do.  So how do you capture that and make it into something that makes you special?

Once you know what makes you special, you will be able to share it with others.  You might even need to speak to others to find out what they think makes you special.  So get out there.  Talk to your nearest and dearest, and find out what makes you one in 7 billion!
